Station 34 · 3912 Center St · Wills Creek valley, Bedford County

We are a few serving many.

That line is the department's own. Thirty five volunteers run Hyndman Volunteer Fire Department Co. 34 out of one station on Center Street. There is no career shift standing by behind them.

Thirty five, drawn to scale.

One mark for every volunteer, standing along the ridge and valley they answer into. The empty mark is the one this page is about.

Thirty five volunteer marks along a valley profile A ridge and valley elevation profile of the terrain around Hyndman. Thirty five small red figures stand shoulder to shoulder along the profile line, with one empty dashed outline near the valley floor. The ground below is filled with a dense field of small dots representing the community the department covers.

Thirty five marks, one dashed outline. Every red figure is a volunteer who already answers. The outline is a space on the line, and it is drawn at the low point of the valley on purpose.

Profile is an original illustration drawn for this concept. It is a representation of ridge and valley terrain, not a survey drawing.

Volunteering here starts with one phone call.

There is no application to download on this page and no form to fill in. Co. 34 answers its own phone and its own Facebook messages. Call the station, or message the department, and ask what the next step looks like.

Three things worth asking on that call

  • What does training actually look like, how long does it take, and who covers the cost of it?
  • How many hours a month does the department genuinely need, and what happens if I can only give some of them?
  • Is there a job here for someone who does not want to ride the engine? Departments this size run on drivers, support, fundraising and paperwork too.

Four units, one bay, Center Street.

The roster as the department lists it. Engine, engine rescue, tanker, brush.

34-12 Engine Rescue 2008 Sparton
34-11 Engine 1992 International
34-20 Tanker 1996 International
34-60 Brush Truck 1991 Dodge

Three of the four were built in the 1990s. A tanker carries its own water, and a brush truck reaches ground a pumper cannot. All four are kept running by the same thirty five people who ride them.

Support goes through the same phone number.

There is deliberately no donate button here. This page is a design concept and nobody should be typing a card number into it. If you want to help Co. 34, go direct.

Call the station or send the department a message on Facebook and ask what they actually need this year. A small department's answer to that question changes: sometimes it is equipment, sometimes it is hands at a fundraiser, sometimes it is somebody willing to be on the roster. Ask first, then give to the thing they named.
